WoW Forever Gold Buying and GDKP Rules: RMT Penalties and Gifted Gold

The short answer

This page collects what Blizzard has officially said about gold buying, real-money trading (RMT) and GDKP for WoW Forever, checked on September 30, 2026.

RMT means trading WoW gold, items or services for real money, and Blizzard Support says it is not allowed.

GDKP is a loot system in which raid or dungeon drops go to the highest gold bid and the gold is then split among the group.

Blizzard’s newest word is a forum post by Community Manager Kaivax on September 28, 2026.

It says Blizzard will increasingly take action against gold buyers’ accounts, not only sellers’ accounts.

The possible actions are removing the illicit gold, taking further action, or both, and further action can include closing accounts.

The GDKP answer comes from the developer Q&A of September 17, 2026, where Senior Game Designer Josh Greenfield said Blizzard is not going to allow GDKP in WoW Forever.

Neither statement sets out a penalty table, and Blizzard has not announced an automatic permanent ban for buying gold.

Confirmed rules vs. stated plans

Blizzard’s statements on this topic come in three forms, and they do not carry the same weight.

Blizzard Support articles are written rules for World of Warcraft as a whole.

A forum post by a Blizzard community manager is an official statement, but it describes direction and possible actions rather than a fixed penalty table.

Answers on the live developer Q&A are the clearest sign of the team’s plans, but they are spoken and can be refined once a written policy is posted.

The table sorts each point by that difference.

The September 28 blue post, point by point

Kaivax posted the message on the US forums on September 28, 2026 at 20:06 UTC, as reply 43 in a player thread titled Gold buying rules.

The same text went up on the EU English forums at 20:07 UTC.

The thread was a player complaint about gold transfers in the beta, and Blizzard’s reply names no player and confirms no individual case.

The post makes four points.

First, real-money transactions are not acceptable in World of Warcraft, and Blizzard is taking steps against them in the WoW Forever beta, at launch and beyond.

Second, Blizzard has always actioned RMT sellers’ accounts as quickly as possible and will now increasingly take action against buyers’ accounts too.

Third, that means Blizzard will “remove the illicit gold from the recipient, and/or take further actions, which can include closing accounts.”

Fourth, Blizzard asks all players to be very cautious about accepting gifts from strangers or other one-sided transactions.

If it becomes apparent that a recipient knew or should have known the gold was not from a legitimate source, that player may face account action as well.

The post says “can include” and “may”, so closing an account is a possible outcome, not an automatic one.

It gives no ban lengths, no strike system and no gold amount that triggers action.

GDKP: what the developers said, and what is not in writing yet

In the developer Q&A video published on September 17, 2026, the host read a player’s question at about 1:15:48: will GDKP be allowed in WoW Forever?

Greenfield’s short answer was no: Blizzard is not going to allow GDKP in WoW Forever.

He gave three reasons.

Blizzard’s first pillar for Forever is to nurture and protect social experiences, and in regions where GDKP has been popular for longer it can overtake the traditional guild structure.

Once GDKP is everywhere, it becomes a real barrier for new players or players with fewer resources, who often have to buy gold to take part.

GDKP is also an excellent way for bad actors to launder large sums of gold, which makes it harder for Blizzard to claw gold back when it actions buyers, sellers or bots.

He added that the team will very actively monitor the economy, and pointed out that Season of Discovery ran without GDKP.

As of September 30, 2026, Blizzard has not published a written GDKP policy for WoW Forever.

Support article 000187406, In-Game Advertising, still lists only Anniversary, Hardcore and Season of Discovery realms as places where GDKP is not allowed.

Elsewhere the same article lets players offer GDKP runs for gold if they advertise them in the Services channel.

So the definition, the penalties and the start date of a Forever GDKP ban are not in writing yet.

For comparison, the 2024 Season of Discovery policy defined GDKP as any raid or dungeon run where items are awarded in exchange for gold.

It set penalties of account actions up to and including suspension and permanent account closure, and it banned advertising GDKP runs in chat.

That was a rule for Season of Discovery only, so it shows how Blizzard has written such a rule before, not what the Forever rule will say.

Until a written policy appears, the safe course is to treat GDKP as not allowed in WoW Forever and not to organize, join or advertise such runs.

Gold buyers: the Q&A words vs. the blue post

Later in the same answer, Greenfield said Blizzard is going to very aggressively punish gold buyers.

He said Blizzard had probably been too lenient on gold buyers and that some of its past actions had been a little easy to get around.

Speaking as someone with a 22-year-old WoW account, he said it is not worth losing an account permanently and strongly recommended not buying gold.

That line is advice, not a published penalty: Blizzard did not announce that every gold buyer is banned permanently.

The September 28 post is the written follow-up, and it lists gold removal, further action and possible account closure.

In the daily report data collected on September 30, 2026, the r/classicwow thread sharing the blue post had 1,274 comments.

In the same data, the Blizzard forum thread Blizzard takes gold with 0 ban time had 586 replies.

A recurring question in those threads was whether removing the gold without a ban is the whole penalty.

Blizzard’s text answers only part of that: gold removal can be the only action, or it can come with further action up to closing accounts.

Gold you did not ask for: what to do

Blizzard’s warning is aimed at gifts from strangers and other one-sided transactions, where you receive gold and give nothing back.

The test is whether you knew or should have known the gold was not from a legitimate source, and Blizzard has not explained how it decides that.

The post does not mention gifts between friends or guildmates.

The steps below follow Blizzard’s post and Support articles; the last one is our own suggestion.

① Do not accept gold in a trade from a player you do not know, especially when nothing goes back the other way.

② If a stranger mails you gold, you can send it back with Return to Sender, the option Support article 19299 describes for mail from other players.

Blizzard has not said whether returning the mail changes how an account is judged.

③ Report real-money trading with the in-game right-click report system, as Support article 269874 advises.

④ Report gold-selling ads in chat the same way; Support article 000187406 says accounts used mainly for advertising will be closed.

⑤ Write down the date, the character name and the amount in case you need to explain it later (our suggestion).

The standing rules in Blizzard Support

Support article 269874, Trading Items and Services for Real Money, is the written base rule.

It says you may not buy or sell WoW items, products or services for real money, and accounts involved may be penalized under the End User License Agreement (EULA).

Items and some in-game services may be traded for gold.

Gold itself may only be bought or sold through the WoW Token service.

We found no Blizzard announcement of a WoW Token for WoW Forever as of September 30, 2026, so there is no announced legitimate way to buy Forever gold with money.

Items should change hands through the trade window, the auction house or C.O.D. mail.

If you are scammed during an unsupported trade, Blizzard Support cannot restore your losses but will investigate the offender.

Support article 000187406 adds that selling in-game items or services such as carries or boosting for real money is not allowed.

Both articles are written for World of Warcraft in general, and the September 28 post confirms that the real-money ban covers the WoW Forever beta and launch.

Not announced yet, and change history

As of September 30, 2026, Blizzard has not announced the following.

A written GDKP policy for WoW Forever with its definition, penalties and start date.

Penalty tiers or ban lengths for gold buyers.

How it judges that a recipient should have known gold was illegitimate, or any gold amount that triggers a review.

Whether returning unsolicited mail protects the recipient.

Whether WoW Forever will have a WoW Token.

The key dates so far are January 30, 2024 (the Season of Discovery GDKP policy, a precedent only), September 17, 2026 (developer Q&A), September 28, 2026 (Kaivax’s post) and September 30, 2026 (our check of the Support articles).
