The 30-second verdict

Pick this pair if you want to gather your own herbs and brew with them.

Together they fill both primary profession slots on one character.

Alchemy earns tradeskill Legacy Points at skill 150, 225 and 300; Herbalism earns none.

Blizzard's table gives Herbalism the Incense Candle and Alchemy the Mana Well at skill 20.

Each player can add one object to a campfire, so you pick one of the two per camp.

Trainers, first herbs and recipes below come from Wowhead, not from Blizzard.

Wowhead is a fan database, so treat those entries as unconfirmed and check in game.

We checked these sources on November 5, 2026, right after launch.

This is a summary of official material and fan data, not a hands-on test.

Three reasons to choose this pair

① You can supply your own herbs.

The Alchemy tooltip says it requires herbs found with Herbalism (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

② Your potions are not tied to one class.

The potion and elixir tooltips we opened show no class requirement (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

Mana potions still help only characters that use mana.

③ You may have something to trade.

The herb and potion tooltips we opened show no binding text (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

That alone does not prove they can be traded, so check in game.

Blizzard's beta notes list Auction House fixes, and its camping article mentions trading.

The beta notes also say many profession-made items had their vendor sell price reduced.

So check in game whether yours can be listed and at what price before counting on sales.

We do not estimate gold income, because no official figures support it.

What is different in WoW Forever

Blizzard's camping article lists Herbalism as gathering and Alchemy as crafting.

You learn a profession from a trainer in the world or in a major city.

To drop one, open the Professions tab (K) and click the X next to it.

Ranks run from Apprentice to Journeyman, Expert and finally Artisan.

Blizzard's articles give that order, not the skill cap of each rank.

The tooltips list caps of 75, 150, 225 and 300 for both (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

The skill pages list the next ranks at skill 50, 125 and 200 (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

The Professions tab shows recipes, blueprints, materials and whether a craft raises skill.

Blizzard says Forever adds over 600 new recipes across professions and level ranges.

It has not said how many belong to Alchemy.

It also says every profession has three camp objects learned at different skill levels.

Find Herbs shows nearby herbs on the minimap (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

Its tooltip allows only one tracking type at a time (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

Who should pick it, and who should not

This pair fits a player who wants to gather and brew on the same character.

It also fits a group that wants Intellect or mana regeneration at camp.

Blizzard counts only non-gathering primary professions for tradeskill Legacy Points.

So Herbalism and Alchemy give at most 3 of those points (our calculation).

A character can earn up to 6 tradeskill points, which takes two crafting professions.

If that 6 matters most, pair Alchemy with another craft (our calculation).

You would then need another herb source, so check in game whether you can buy them.

Two gathering professions give 0 tradeskill points (our calculation).

A comparison of goals, not a ranking. Points follow Blizzard's rule for non-gathering primary professions.

Levels, PvP, adventure, dungeons and raids still earn Legacy Points separately.

You can change later: the X in the Professions tab removes a profession.

How to start: trainers and first supplies

Blizzard says trainers are found in the world and in major cities.

It names no trainers here, so the table comes from Wowhead pages (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

Camp features: Incense Candle, Mana Well and Alchemy Lab

A Basic Campfire holds up to three camp features, with one from each player.

All camp features share a 1-hour cooldown and need a campfire nearby.

Players who sit or craft nearby for 1 minute gain the benefits.

At skill 20, Blizzard says first items come from a starter zone quest or a trainer's shop.

The Incense Candle gives you and others sitting nearby 2-25 Intellect by level.

It is mutually exclusive with Arcane Intellect.

The Mana Well restores 10-29 Mana every 5 seconds by level for those sitting nearby.

It is mutually exclusive with Blessing of Wisdom.

Wowhead's candle tooltip uses Peacebloom and Silverleaf (unconfirmed).

Its well tooltip uses Peacebloom and an Empty Vial (unconfirmed).

Items needing skill 140 or higher drop in dungeons and raids, it adds.

Wowhead calls it Alchemy Laboratory, at Alchemy 300, for recipes needing it (unconfirmed).

A Fermenter at Alchemy 140 makes certain reagents (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

A Greenhouse at Herbalism 140 grows herbs from planted seeds (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

A Seed Hybridizer at Herbalism 300 multiplies or combines seeds (Wowhead, unconfirmed).

Wowhead says those four add the skill 20 buff and can replace that item (unconfirmed).

Legacy perks: Bountiful Harvest and Reagent Economy

Reaching 150 in a non-gathering primary profession can unlock the Legacy System.

So Alchemy can open it, but Herbalism cannot do that by itself.

You can open the system with the shield icon on the menu or the Y key.

Each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points at launch.

Bountiful Harvest is in the Professions tree.

The Legacy article says it finds extra Scarce resources when mining, herbing or skinning.

The Deep Dive recap says it increases the materials gathered.

Blizzard has not published its size or which herbs count as Scarce.

Reagent Economy is in the Resourcefulness tree.

Class abilities stop needing purchasable reagents.

Tier 1 camp features need no materials to craft.

Official World of Warcraft: Forever screenshot of the Reagent Economy perk tooltip: class abilities no longer need reagents from vendors, and Tier 1 camping features cost no reagents.

We read tier 1 as the skill 20 items, such as the candle and the well, so check in game.

What Blizzard has not published

These Blizzard articles name camp objects but no potion or elixir recipe.

They give no skill requirement for any herb.

They give the rank order but no skill or level requirement for each rank.

They do not list trainers by name.

The Greenhouse tooltip does not say where seeds come from.

We found no official price data for herbs or potions.

Check this page again if the tooltips change after launch.
