The 30-second verdict
Pick this pair if you want to gather your own materials and craft with them.
Together they fill both primary profession slots on one character.
Blacksmithing earns Legacy Points at skill 150, 225 and 300; Mining earns none.
Blizzard's table gives Blacksmithing the Sharpening Wheel at skill 20.
It has no Mining row; Wowhead lists a Lodestone, which Blizzard has not confirmed.
Trainers, tools, recipes and materials below come from Wowhead, not from Blizzard.
Wowhead is a fan database, so treat those entries as unconfirmed and check in game.
We checked these sources on November 5, 2026, right after launch.
This is a summary of official material and fan data, not a hands-on test.
Three reasons to choose this pair
① You can supply your own materials.
Wowhead's Blacksmithing tooltip (unconfirmed) says it needs stone and metal from Mining.
Its Smelting tooltip (unconfirmed) says miners turn ore into metal bars at a forge.
② You can add a buff to a campsite.
Blizzard says the Sharpening Wheel gives players sitting nearby 6-34 Strength by level.
It is mutually exclusive with Strength of Earth Totem.
③ You get something from both Legacy paths.
Blacksmithing counts toward the Tradeskills Legacy Challenges.
Mining benefits from Bountiful Harvest, a perk for gathered materials.
These reasons come from official text and labeled fan data, not from a ranking.
We do not estimate gold income, because no official figures support it.
What is different in WoW Forever
Blizzard's camping article allows two primary professions.
You learn a profession from a trainer in the world or in a major city.
To drop one, open the Professions tab (K) and click the X next to it.
Ranks run from Apprentice to Journeyman, Expert and finally Artisan.
Blizzard's articles give that order but not a skill cap for each rank.
Wowhead's tooltips (unconfirmed) show caps of 75, 150, 225 and 300 for both professions.
The Professions tab shows recipes, blueprints, materials and likely skill-ups.
Blizzard says Forever adds over 600 new recipes across professions and level ranges.
It has not said how many belong to Mining or Blacksmithing.
Blizzard also says every profession has three camp objects at different skill levels.
Advanced objects come from Blueprint recipes that drop from dungeon bosses.
Its October 1 beta notes made some Blacksmithing recipes random dungeon drops.
The same notes reduced Poor Copper Vein nodes in starting areas.
Two new factions are a major source of new tradeskill activities, says Blizzard.
They are the Azeroth Commerce Authority and Durotar Supply and Logistics.
Who should pick it, and who should not
This pair fits a player who wants to gather and craft on the same character.
It also fits a group that wants a Strength camp buff from its own members.
Blizzard counts only non-gathering primary professions for tradeskill Legacy Points.

So Mining and Blacksmithing give at most 3 of those points (our calculation).
A character can earn up to 6 tradeskill points, which takes two crafting professions.
If that 6 matters most, Blacksmithing and Engineering reach it (our calculation).
Wowhead's tooltips (unconfirmed) say both of those crafts use mined stone and metal.
So that pair would need its materials from somewhere else.
| If you want | Consider | Tradeskill Legacy Points |
|---|---|---|
| To gather and craft yourself | Mining + Blacksmithing | Up to 3our calculation |
| To gather and build devices | Mining + Engineering | Up to 3our calculation |
| The most tradeskill points | Blacksmithing + Engineering | Up to 6our calculation |
A comparison of goals, not a ranking. Points follow Blizzard's rule for non-gathering primary professions.
You can change later: the X in the Professions tab removes a profession.
How to start: trainers and tools
Blizzard says trainers are found in the world and in major cities.
Its articles name no trainers, so the table comes from Wowhead's NPC pages (unconfirmed).
| City | Mining (Wowhead, unconfirmed) | Blacksmithing (Wowhead, unconfirmed) |
|---|---|---|
| Stormwind | Gelman Stonehand | Therum Deepforge |
| Ironforge | Geofram Bouldertoe | Bengus Deepforge |

| Undercity | Brom Killian | James Van Brunt |
| Thunder Bluff | Brek Stonehoof | Karn Stonehoof |
Unconfirmed fan data: NPC names and zones from Wowhead WoW Forever NPC pages, checked November 5, 2026. Blizzard has not published this list.
Those pages show the title Mining Trainer for the Mining names.
The Blacksmithing names show Expert or Artisan titles, which do not prove their lessons.
So open the trainer window and check that it offers the rank you need.
We left Darnassus out because we did not confirm a trainer there.
Wowhead's tooltip (unconfirmed) says Mining needs a Mining Pick.
Wowhead lists Mining Pick vendors in all six capitals (unconfirmed).
Its recipe tooltips (unconfirmed) list a Blacksmith Hammer for many copper crafts.
Wowhead lists Blacksmith Hammer vendors in all six capitals too (unconfirmed).
It also lists both tools in zones such as Elwynn Forest and Durotar (unconfirmed).
Wowhead also shows a Mining for Dummies item that can teach Mining (unconfirmed).

First materials and crafts: unconfirmed Wowhead data
Blizzard's articles do not list these recipes, so every value here comes from Wowhead.

Wowhead's Smelting tooltip says smelting requires a forge.
Wowhead lists Smelt Copper as 1 Copper Ore into 1 Copper Bar.

Unconfirmed fan data from Wowhead WoW Forever tooltips, checked November 5, 2026. Not from Blizzard, and not a leveling route.
These tooltips do not show the skill each recipe needs or where you learn it.
Blizzard says the Professions tab shows whether a craft will raise your skill.
Our suggestion is to check the stones first, since Wowhead lists only stone for them.
Pairing: Mining with Blacksmithing or Engineering
Wowhead's Mining tooltip (unconfirmed) names Engineering and Blacksmithing as uses.
Wowhead also lists early Engineering recipes using stone and copper (unconfirmed).
Blizzard's camping table shows the camp features differ.
Blacksmithing's Sharpening Wheel raises Strength at skill 20.
Engineering's Reagent Bot lets you and others nearby buy reagents at skill 20.
| Compare | Mining + Blacksmithing | Mining + Engineering |

| Tradeskill Legacy Points | Up to 3our calculation | Up to 3our calculation |
Each cell shows its source. Legacy Points follow Blizzard's rule for non-gathering primary professions.
Either pair gives at most 3 tradeskill Legacy Points (our calculation).
Camp features: Sharpening Wheel, Lodestone and upgrades
A Basic Campfire holds up to three camp features, with one from each player.
All camp features share a 1-hour cooldown and need a campfire nearby.
Players who sit or craft nearby for 1 minute gain the benefits.

By our reading, one character cannot place both of its features at the same campfire.
Blizzard says you get a first item from a starter zone quest or a trainer at skill 20.
Items needing skill 140 or higher drop in dungeons and raids, it adds.
Sharpening Wheel gives 6-34 Strength by level and excludes Strength of Earth Totem.
Blizzard calls its table a sample, and the table has no Mining row.
Wowhead lists a Mining feature, the Lodestone, at skill 20 (unconfirmed).
Wowhead says it adds melee Attack Power and excludes Blessing of Might (unconfirmed).
Wowhead lists an Anvil and a Rock Garden at skill 140 (unconfirmed).
Wowhead lists a Master Forge and a Molten Foundry at skill 300 (unconfirmed).
Its tooltips say each one keeps the skill 20 buff and can replace that item (unconfirmed).
They say a Rock Garden spawns a common mining node over time (unconfirmed).
They say the skill 300 items serve recipes that require them (unconfirmed).
| Camp feature | Skill | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sharpening Wheel | Blacksmithing 20 | Strength 6-34 by level | Blizzard |
| Anvil | Blacksmithing 140 | Anvil and Sharpening Wheel buff | Wowhead, unconfirmed |

| Rock Garden | Mining 140 | Common mining node and Lodestone buff | Wowhead, unconfirmed |
| Molten Foundry | Mining 300 | Recipe station and Lodestone buff | Wowhead, unconfirmed |
Only the Sharpening Wheel row is from Blizzard. The others are unconfirmed fan data from Wowhead tooltips, checked November 5, 2026.
We do not name Blueprint drop sources, because we only saw them in fan data.
Legacy perks for miners and smiths
Reaching 150 in a non-gathering primary profession can unlock the Legacy System.
So Blacksmithing can open it, but Mining cannot do that by itself.
You can open the system with the shield icon on the menu or the Y key.
Each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points at launch.
Bountiful Harvest finds additional Scarce resources when you mine, herb or skin.
Working Overtime raises your chance of a skill point in all tradeskills.
Dedicated Study is a daily cooldown that helps tradeskills rise faster.
Bartering lowers the gold price of items bought from vendors.
Field Guide reduces the 1-hour cooldown on placing camp features.
Permanence extends party, raid and camping buffs.

Reagent Economy lets you craft tier 1 camp features without materials.
Blizzard has not published the size of these effects.
What Blizzard has not published
Blizzard has not listed the new recipes by profession.
It has not said what counts as a Scarce resource for Bountiful Harvest.
Its articles give no skill cap, skill requirement or level requirement for each rank.
They do not name the Lodestone, Rock Garden, Molten Foundry, Anvil or Master Forge.
Fan guides describe new ores and bars, but we could not check them in Forever tooltips.
We left those names out until we can check them.
We also found no Blizzard statement on Classic Blacksmithing specializations.
Blizzard's articles do not list materials for camp features or Blueprint drop sources.
Check this page again if Blizzard publishes these details or the game data changes.
