The short answer: a natural pair with a new camp object
Skinning gathers leather and hides from beasts, and Leatherworking turns them into gear.
Together they fill the two primary profession slots each character gets.
Leather wearers benefit most, and Hunters get extra storage recipes.
The big Forever change is the Tanning Rack, a camp object you place by a campfire.
Blizzard says the rack is required for more advanced Leatherworking recipes.
Wowhead's data says it needs Leatherworking 140 and a Blueprint from a dungeon boss.
Leatherworking earns Legacy Points, and Skinning gains from the Bountiful Harvest perk.
We checked Blizzard's articles in three languages on November 5, 2026.
Where Blizzard gives no detail, we use Wowhead's WoW Forever data, a fan database.
Its values can change, and this is a summary of sources, not a hands-on test.
What you get from this pair
Skinning's tooltip says it skins animals for pelts and furs used in Leatherworking.
Leatherworking's first-rank tooltip asks for leather scraps and hides from Skinning.
So you gather your own materials while fighting beasts (our reading).
You still buy some supplies: Wowhead marks Coarse Thread and Salt as sold by NPCs.
Leatherworking's rank tooltips describe making leather armor.
| What you get | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Materials while hunting | Skinning supplies Leatherworking; thread and salt are bought | Wowhead; our reading |
| Starter gear | Leather armor and armor kits | Wowhead |
| Hunter storage | Quiver or ammo pouch, 8 slots | Wowhead |
| Reagent bag | 6 slots; pattern at Leatherworking 30 | Wowhead |
| Camp objects | Three per profession, the first at skill 20 | Blizzard |
| Legacy | Up to 3 tradeskill points, plus Bountiful Harvest | Blizzard; our calculation |
Wowhead WoW Forever data (fan database) and Blizzard's articles, checked November 5, 2026.
Light Armor Kit adds 1 Stamina and 8 Armor to a chest, legs, hands or feet item.
Light Leather Quiver and Small Leather Ammo Pouch: 8 slots, 10% ranged attack speed.
Light Leather Reagent Bag has 6 slots.
Its pattern is a quest reward and needs Leatherworking 30, in Wowhead's data.
Blizzard gives every profession three camp objects, the first at skill 20.
Leatherworking can earn up to 3 tradeskill Legacy Points (our calculation).
We do not estimate gold income, because no official numbers support it.
Who should pick it
Blizzard's WoW Classic first-steps guide lists the armor each class can wear.
Rogues and Druids get cloth and leather, so leather is their heaviest armor there.
Hunters and Shamans get cloth, leather and mail.
Mages, Priests and Warlocks get cloth only.
Warriors and Paladins get all armor.
The Forever articles we checked give no separate armor table.
| Class | Armor in Blizzard's guide | Fit (our judgment) |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue, Druid | Cloth, Leather | Strong: leather is the heaviest armor |
| Hunter | Cloth, Leather, Mail | Good: leather pieces, quiver, ammo pouch |
| Shaman | Cloth, Leather, Mail | Fair: leather pieces |
| Warrior, Paladin | All | Fair: armor kits and camp objects |
| Mage, Priest, Warlock | Cloth | Weak for gear: armor kits and camp objects only |
Armor from Blizzard's WoW Classic first-steps guide. The fit column is our judgment, not a Blizzard rating.
Our judgment: this pair fits a Rogue or Druid who wants to craft their own gear.
It also fits Hunters, because Leatherworking has a quiver and an ammo pouch.
Shamans can wear the leather pieces too, though that guide also lists mail for them.
Cloth wearers cannot use the leather pieces, but armor kits and camp objects still help.
If you chase Legacy Points, two crafting professions can earn 6 instead of 3.
Our profession guide compares the other pairs.
What changes in Forever: the Tanning Rack and camp objects
Blizzard says Leatherworkers can place a Tanning Rack required for more advanced recipes.
Its later camping article also lists Tanning Racks among helpful conveniences.
Wowhead's tooltip says the rack allows the creation of certain reagents.
Blizzard does not list which recipes need it, and the recipe pages we read show none.

Blizzard gives every profession three camp objects, learned at different skill levels.
Camp Tent needs Leatherworking 20 and 5 Light Leather.
It raises Rested experience to 5% of a level, with no effect if you already have more.
Tanning Rack needs Leatherworking 140, 5 Medium Leather, 3 Fine Thread and 2 Simple Wood.
It gives all Camp Tent benefits and can be placed over a Camp Tent to replace it.
Sewing Machine: Leatherworking 300, 1 Undeath Engine, 5 Rugged Leather, 1 Rune Thread.
It serves recipes that require it and also gives all Camp Tent benefits.
Camp Chair needs Skinning 20, 3 Light Leather and 2 Simple Wood.
It gives 2% critical strike chance and is mutually exclusive with Moonkin Aura.
Field Guide needs Skinning 140, 3 Medium Leather, 2 Slimy Murloc Scale and 1 Fine Thread.
You read it to gain Track Beasts, and it gives all Camp Chair benefits.
Trapper's Workbench needs Skinning 300, 2 Simple Wood, 4 Heavy Leather and 1 Iron Bar.
It holds 1 trap and gives all Camp Chair benefits.
| Object and skill | Materials | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Camp TentLeatherworking 20 | 5 Light Leather | Rested experience to 5% of a level |
| Tanning RackLeatherworking 140 | 5 Medium Leather, 3 Fine Thread, 2 Simple Wood | Certain reagents, plus Camp Tent benefits |

| Camp ChairSkinning 20 | 3 Light Leather, 2 Simple Wood | 2% critical strike chance |
| Field GuideSkinning 140 | 3 Medium Leather, 2 Slimy Murloc Scale, 1 Fine Thread | Gain Track Beasts, plus Camp Chair benefits |
| Trapper's WorkbenchSkinning 300 | 2 Simple Wood, 4 Heavy Leather, 1 Iron Bar | Holds 1 trap, plus Camp Chair benefits |
Tent and Chair skill and effect are in Blizzard's table. Other values are Wowhead data, checked November 5, 2026.
All camp features need a campfire nearby and share a 1-hour cooldown.
A Basic Campfire takes up to 3 added objects, one per player.
You learn the first object at skill 20 from starter-zone quests or a profession trainer.
Blizzard says items at skill 140 or higher come from dungeon and raid drops.
Wowhead lists Blueprint: Tanning Rack as a drop from Razorclaw the Butcher.
That boss is in Shadowfang Keep.
Blueprint: Field Guide is listed from Lady Anacondra in Wailing Caverns.
Blueprint: Trapper's Workbench is listed from Houndmaster Loksey in Scarlet Monastery.
Wowhead shows no source for Blueprint: Sewing Machine yet.
Wowhead's drop rates are early samples, so we do not quote them.
How to start: trainer, knife, first leather
Blizzard says you learn a profession from a trainer in the world or in a major city.
① Learn Skinning from a trainer, using one of your two primary slots.
② Buy a Skinning Knife, because the Skinning tooltip requires one.
Wowhead marks the knife as sold by NPCs, including in Orgrimmar, Ironforge and Undercity.
③ Skin beasts for early materials such as Ruined Leather Scraps and Light Hide.
④ Learn Leatherworking from a trainer and open the Professions tab (K).
Blizzard says it shows recipes, their materials and whether a craft raises your skill.
⑤ At skill 20 in each profession, look for its first camp object.
Your first steps
- Train SkinningOne of two primary slots
- Buy a Skinning KnifeThe tooltip requires one
- Skin beastsScraps and hides

- Reach skill 20First camp objects
Ranks run Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Artisan.
Tooltips for both professions cap those ranks at 75, 150, 225 and 300.
To drop a profession, open the Professions tab (K) and click the X next to it.
The table lists NPCs by the titles and zones on Wowhead's pages, without coordinates.
It covers six classic capitals and their starting zones, not the new Skyborne area.
| Start | Junior Skinning Trainer | Skinning Trainer | Leatherworker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Riley Peltskinner, Elwynn Forest | Maris Granger, Stormwind City | Simon Tanner, Stormwind City |

Wowhead WoW Forever NPC pages (fan database), checked November 5, 2026. Not a complete list.
The leatherworkers listed are Expert or Artisan by title.
Two Journeyman Leatherworkers are closer to the start.
They are Adele Fielder in Elwynn Forest and Chaw Stronghide in Mulgore.
Wowhead also has a Junior Leatherworking Trainer, but with no known location yet.
The pages we read do not show who teaches which rank, so check at the NPC.

The vest also gives +1 Agility.

Wowhead WoW Forever recipe tooltips (fan database), checked November 5, 2026.
The recipe pages we read do not show the required skill or the teacher.
They also do not name the profession, so we matched these by their leather materials.
So treat this as a list to look for, not a set levelling order.
Blizzard counts over 600 new recipes across all professions.
It gives no figure for Leatherworking, so we do not quote one.
Legacy Points and perks for this pair
Tradeskills is one of six Legacy Challenge categories.

Each non-gathering primary profession gives one point at skill 150, 225 and 300.
So Leatherworking can earn 3 points, and Skinning earns none (our calculation).
Reaching 150 in Leatherworking also unlocks the Legacy System.
Each character can spend up to 16 Legacy Points at launch.
Bountiful Harvest helps you find additional Scarce resources when skinning.
Working Overtime raises your chance of a skill point in all tradeskills.
Bartering lowers the gold price of items you buy from vendors.
Performance Bonus sometimes gives extra Merchant's Favor with two new factions.
They are the Azeroth Commerce Authority and Durotar Supply and Logistics.
Dedicated Study is a daily cooldown for faster tradeskill progress.
Reagent Economy makes tier 1 camping features free to craft.
We read tier 1 as first objects like the tent and chair, but Blizzard does not list them.
| Perk | Effect |
|---|---|
| Bountiful Harvest | More Scarce resources when skinning |
| Working Overtime | Higher skill-up chance in all tradeskills |
| Bartering | Lower gold prices at vendors |
| Performance Bonus | Sometimes extra Merchant's Favor |
| Dedicated Study | Daily cooldown for faster progress |
| Reagent Economy | Tier 1 camping features cost no materials |
| Field Guide | Shorter camp feature cooldown |
From Blizzard's Legacy System article. Effect sizes and costs are not published.
The Field Guide perk cuts the 1-hour cooldown on placing camp features.
It is separate from Skinning's Field Guide camp object.

Blizzard has not published effect sizes or point costs for these perks.
Not announced yet, and a short checklist

① Decide whether this pair or two crafting professions suits your character.
② Train Skinning, buy a Skinning Knife and skin beasts as you level.
③ Train Leatherworking and check the Professions tab (K) for recipes.
④ At skill 20, look for the Camp Tent and Camp Chair.
