The short answer: optional transmog with Classic-minded rules

Transmogrification, or transmog, lets your gear show a different appearance.

Blizzard says transmog was not part of the original game.

It also says unusual outfits can break immersion for some players.

WoW Forever is therefore built for two kinds of players.

Some want to collect appearances.

Others want to play as if transmog did not exist.

The basics should feel familiar, but Blizzard lists a few Classic-minded adjustments.

RuleWhat Blizzard says

Classic ModeTransmog is switched off when you enter the world

Epic raid dropAppearance only for the player it binds to
Armor typePlate to plate, cloth to cloth
LevelHigh-level appearances wait until level 60
Helm and cloakCan be hidden even with transmog off

From Blizzard's Deep Dive panel recap. The U.S. English, German and Korean versions say the same.

The two biggest limits are armor type and level.

High-level appearances only open up at level 60.

Every rule here comes from Blizzard's Deep Dive panel recap of September 13, 2026.

We read the recap in its U.S. English, German and Korean versions.

The bundle sets come from Blizzard's official WoW Forever page.

This is a summary of official announcements, not a hands-on test on the beta.

Not in the original game: what WoW Forever adds

The original World of Warcraft had no transmog.

Blizzard says so directly in the recap.

TransmogNot in the gameOptional, at a transmogrifier
Appearance collectionNoneYes, even with transmog off
Hide helm or cloakYesYes, even with transmog off
How other players lookTheir equipped gearTheir transmogor their equipped gear if you switch it off

The original-game column follows Blizzard's own description in the Deep Dive recap.

What the original did have was the option to hide your helm and cloak.

WoW Forever keeps that option, even for players who switch transmog off.

It also keeps the old view of other players.

With transmog off, a helm or cloak that someone has hidden stays hidden for you.

Blizzard says this preserves the original behavior around those display choices.

What is new is the transmogrifier and the appearance collection.

There is also a switch that decides whether you see other players' transmog.

The bundle transmog sets are new as well.

Blizzard's product page says their in-game items are not available in WoW Classic.

Switching transmog off and Classic Mode

You can visit a transmogrifier in certain cities to set up transmog outfits.

There you can also disable the system entirely.

Blizzard has not yet named those cities.

Switching it off changes what you see.

Players around you then appear in the gear they actually have equipped.

✓ yes, — no. Classic Mode starts you with transmog off.

You can choose Classic Mode when you first launch the game.

If you do, transmog is switched off automatically when you enter the world.

Switching it off does not stop collecting.

Appearances from new gear are still collected in case you want transmog later.

It also does not stop you from setting your own look.

You can still hide a slot such as the helm or cloak.

You can also show a particular appearance without turning the full system on.

Blizzard's goal is maximum control over what you see in your own game.

How appearances are collected: quality and binding

Blizzard explains collection by item quality.

Poor (gray) and Common (white) items teach their appearance as soon as you loot them.

They do not have to bind to you first.

That lets low-level or unbound appearances be shared more freely.

Bind-on-pickup Uncommon (green) and Rare (blue) items can drop in dungeons.

Once such an item is looted, every eligible looter gets its appearance.

Epic (purple) raid drops give their appearance only to the player the item binds to.

ItemWhen you get the lookWho gets it
Poor or CommonWhen looted, no binding neededThe player who loots it
Uncommon or Rarebind on pickup, from a dungeonWhen anyone loots itEvery eligible looter
Epicfrom a raidWhen you acquire itOnly the player it binds to
Other itemsbind on equip, quest rewards, craftedNot announcedNot announced

From Blizzard's Deep Dive panel recap. The last row is not covered by the recap.

Blizzard has not spelled out the rule for other cases.

These include bind-on-equip Uncommon or better items, quest rewards and crafted gear.

The Poor and Common rule is described as not needing to bind first.

That suggests better items may still need to bind.

This is our reading, not an official statement.

The recap also does not say whether your collection is account-wide or per character.

Dungeon and raid loot: who gets the appearance

The group rule is there so that appearances and upgrades do not compete.

A bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare item may drop in a dungeon.

Once someone loots it, every eligible looter gets its appearance.

WhereDropAppearance goes to
DungeonUncommon or Rare, bind on pickupEvery eligible looter
RaidEpicOnly the player it binds to
RaidUncommon or RareNot announced

From Blizzard's Deep Dive panel recap.

So a player who needs the item as an upgrade need not worry about look-only rolls.

The same recap says unique dungeon boss items are now Rare (blue) quality.

Put together, bind-on-pickup blue boss drops in dungeons share their appearance.

That is our reading of the two statements.

Raids work differently.

An Epic raid drop gives its appearance only to the player it binds to.

Blizzard says this keeps high-end rewards prestigious.

It also leaves loot decisions to the raid group.

The recap does not say how Uncommon or Rare items that drop in raids are handled.

Armor type and the level 60 unlock

Transmog still follows item-type rules: plate transmogs to plate and cloth to cloth.

What counts is the item in the slot, not your class.

LimitBefore level 60At level 60
Armor typePlate to plate, cloth to clothStill applies
Level requirementNo high-level appearancesLifted for valid appearances
Cosmetic-only itemsExceptionException

From Blizzard's Deep Dive panel recap. Blizzard says cosmetic-only items will be rare in WoW Forever.

Blizzard's example is a Paladin wearing a cloth chest such as Robes of the Exalted.

That chest can only take another cloth chest appearance.

Low-level characters cannot use high-level appearances.

At level 60 the level restrictions are removed for valid appearances in your collection.

Only the level restriction is lifted at level 60; the armor-type rule stays.

Cosmetic-only items are the exception, but Blizzard says they will be rare in WoW Forever.

Bundle transmog sets

Blizzard's official WoW Forever page lists three transmog items.

They come with the paid upgrade editions.

The Shen'dorei Skyseer's Garb transmog set comes with every edition.

So does the Veteran Adventurer's Rucksack back transmog.

The editions are the Skyborne Heroic Pack and the Skyborne Epic Pack.

The third is the Warcraft Forever Collection.

The Veteran Adventurer's Outdoor Wear transmog set comes with two editions.

Those are the Skyborne Epic Pack and the Warcraft Forever Collection.

The page marks all three as in-game items you can use in both modern WoW and WoW Forever.

It also says the included in-game items are not available in WoW Classic.

Blizzard has not said whether these sets follow the armor-type and level 60 rules.

It has also not said whether they count as cosmetic-only items.

Not announced yet, and a quick checklist

As of September 28, 2026, Blizzard's announcements do not cover the following.

Which cities have a transmogrifier, and whether changing an appearance costs gold.

Whether collected appearances are account-wide or per character.

Whether weapons follow the same rules as armor.

How bind-on-equip items, quest rewards and crafted gear are collected.

How raid Uncommon or Rare drops are handled.

Blizzard's beta feedback forum has a player thread titled “FEEDBACK: Transmog Forever”.

It had 7 posts when our daily report collected it on September 28, 2026.

It is player feedback, not an official answer.

① Decide at first launch whether you want Classic Mode.

Classic Mode starts you with transmog off.

② In dungeons, roll on a bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare only if you need the item.

Every eligible looter gets the look anyway.

③ High-level appearances you collect while leveling only work from level 60.

④ Before buying an edition for its transmog, check your region's price.

Also check which edition includes which set.
